Biography
Spyros Spondylidis is an academic researcher focusing on satellite oceanography applications. He has acquired his PhD degree in Marine Sciences, his Master’s degree in Geography and Geoinformatics from the University of the Aegean PhD in the Department of Geography and his Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences in the Department of Marine Sciences. His scientific interests mainly involve applications of Remote Sensing in oceanography and coastal environments, and he works with both satellite and UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) data. His research focuses on modeling fish population distribution using remote sensing data. He utilizes various oceanographic variables such as chlorophyll-a concentration, Sea Surface Temperature, and oceanic circulation to locate and predict potential habitats of small pelagic fish. Additionally, he has professional experience in coastal and marine habitat mapping through high resolution remote sensing data, with the use of machine learning classification models and Object Based Image Analysis techniques. Mapping has been conducted in several regions across the Greek coastline, including Thermaikos Gulf, the Ionian Islands, Lesvos, Sporades etc.
