Citizen science
CaRe-GR runs a national citizen-science initiative that trains and equips volunteer divers to help monitor the health of Greece’s reefs, extending observation far beyond what a small research team could ever survey alone.
The initiative
Turning dives into data
Through the “Cscience4all – diving” initiative, CaRe-GR recruits and trains volunteer divers, oceanography graduates and regional stakeholders in standardised reef-monitoring protocols. Every trained diver expands data collection across the Greek seas and helps build the long-term monitoring networks the project depends on.
Participation is built on established, standardised methods — including the Reef Check and Climate Fish protocols — so that observations recorded by volunteers are scientifically robust. Divers record species presence, upload photographs and log timestamped observations through an accessible online interface, feeding a shared picture of how Mediterranean marine ecosystems are responding to climate change and supporting Greece’s reporting under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

Volunteer divers
If you are a recreational diver or snorkeller, you can be trained in the project’s protocols and start contributing observations. Every logged dive adds to a growing national picture of reef biodiversity and status.
Collaborating dive centres
Dive centres across Greece are invited to join the network: host trained volunteer divers, run standardised monitoring at your local sites, and help embed marine citizen science in coastal communities.
